Controversy Surrounding Barrister Chief Oyibo Chukwu’s Political Assassination And Its Aftereffects
The 2023 General Election has come and left like it never happened, winners of the General Elections are two months into the term. A lot of politicianswere assassinated due to the election violence and the involvement of gangs on campaign grounds.
It will be recalled that in an incident which signaled a high profile political assassination, and reported by the PM News edition on 23rd of February, 2023, was the assassination of Barrister Chief Oyibo Chukwu, the then Labour Party’s (LP) Senatorial Candidate for Enugu South and four members of his campaign team who were gruesomely murdered and burnt to ashes, on the 22nd day of February, 2023, at Amechi Akwunanaw on his way from a campaign tour in Agbani, Nkanu West in Enugu State by perceived opponents barely three days to the National Assembly Election fixed for the 25th of that month.
Barrister Chief Oyibo Chukwu was a lawyer, politician and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association in Enugu State.
All fingers as been pointed to other political party candidates and had been invited for questioning several times, some gangs were caught who seemed to be involved in the assassination of Barrister Chief Oyibo Chukwu.
The case has since been charged to court but the unending ripples in the aftermath of the high-profile assassination are the incessant threats to the life of his Special Assistant/Mobilisation Director, Mr. Suleiman Ashekun, who had witnessed the dastardly act and gruesome murder of his principal, as the perpetrators and sponsors of Barrister Oyibo Chukwu’s murder are certainly not comfortable with him being alive to give evidence at the court hearings.
Mr. Suleiman Ashekun, who barely escaped being killed and burnt along with his principal and four others, was however hiding in a safe position nearby, where he was able to witness the dastardly act of the murder and incineration of his late principal and others.
Sulaiman was attacked but he luckily escaped the assassination attempt by whiskers on the 13th of April 2023 at Abakpa Nike town in Enugu State.
The last time our correspondent had a conversation with Sulaiman was in May after another attack on his life at Nsuka in the same State where his principal and others were killed and burnt up.
He had a twisted leg in his attempt to escape from his assailants as he was running for his dear life during the attack which ultimately landed him in the hospital.
He was said to have fled for his dear life to Ogun state, southwest, Nigeria, but was later traced down and attacked along with his family members but rescued by the Police.
Till date we are yet to get a response from Mr. Suleiman. The Nigerian political circle had been a dead end for politicians that wants to play politics with honestyand goodwill.
Mr Suleiman is one of those whoselife has been put in disarray and placement due to his involvement with Late Barrister Chief Oyibo Chukwu.
