NCS Probe Day 7: Panel investigates corruption allegations

The independent investigative panel on the alleged corruption of the Nigerian Correctional Service continued its public hearing on Tuesday, focusing on the treatment of complaints and presentations from justice and law enforcement agencies.
Key Issues Discussed:
Transfers and Entitlements: The panel examined the processes surrounding transfers, entitlements of correctional officers, and deductions from staff salaries for welfare purposes.
Dismissals and Certificate Verification: A case involving dismissals linked to university-issued certificates was presented, with the panel seeking more information on the verification process.
Police Custody and Detention: The panel discussed issues related to police custody, including compliance with the 24-hour and 48-hour time frames for detention, and allegations of torture.
Partnership with NDLEA: The panel highlighted the need for increased partnership between the Nigerian Correctional Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to address inmate rehabilitation and support.
Magdalene Ajani, chairperson of the independent investigative panel, emphasized the need for holistic reform of the system, better service delivery, and an improved work-life environment for correctional officers. She urged the Nigerian Correctional Service not to view the probe as a witch hunt.
The five men panel includes Dr. Magdalene Ajani, Dr. Uju Agomoh, Dr. Iyke Ezeugo, Eva Omotosho Esq, and Alh. Nasir Usman, is expected to deliver on its mandate to investigate alleged corruption, abuse of power, and degrading treatment within the Nigerian Correctional Service.
