The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) continues its fight against vandalism and to prevent illegal excavations around transmission towers by organizing another sensitization programme in the Umelu Community, Benin City, Edo State.
Held on August 20, 2025, at the palace of the Enogie of Umelu community, the event aimed to educate community members and the general public on the dangers of vandalizing and encroaching on transmission infrastructures.
In his address, the General Manager, Transmission, Benin Region, Engr. C.C. Iwuamadi expressed his appreciation to the community for their continuous efforts towards safeguarding transmission infrastructures situated within their domain.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration in protecting national assets, warning that tampering with these infrastructures can have devastating consequences on lives, properties, and the sustainability of the National Grid.
The exercise drew key stakeholders, including community chiefs, youth leaders, representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and members of the press. By engaging with the community and relevant stakeholders, TCN is taking a holistic approach to curb vandalism and illegal excavation to ensure the security of its facilities.
This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to protecting national assets and promoting a stable power supply. This sensitization programme in Benin is part of TCN’s ongoing nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the importance of protecting transmission infrastructure.
Earlier in the year, TCN had successfully held similar programmes in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Enugu, engaging with local communities and stakeholders to promote collaboration in the fight against vandalism.
The company plans to continue these efforts in other states, targeting communities that host transmission lines and towers in a bid to foster a culture of vigilance and collective responsibility in safeguarding national assets.
Through this sensitization programme, TCN hopes to raise awareness about the importance of preserving transmission infrastructure and the potential consequences of vandalism.
By working together with local communities and stakeholders, the company aims to create a safer and more secure environment for its facilities, ultimately contributing to the reliability and sustainability of the National Grid.
