Traditional religion practitioners in Ogun State have applauded Governor Dapo Abiodun for maintaining August 20 as a public holiday dedicated to Isese Day, the annual celebration of Yoruba culture, spirituality, and heritage.

During this year’s commemoration held on Wednesday, an Ifa priest, Ayedun Ifadare, popularly called Agbotifayo Empire, spoke on behalf of the traditionalists. He described the governor’s consistency over the last two years as a major boost to the preservation of cultural values in the state.

“We are grateful to Governor Dapo Abiodun for recognizing Isese Day as a public holiday. For two years now, this has brought us joy and fulfillment. Truly, the prayers of our forefathers are being answered,” he said.

Agbotifayo further pointed out that the festival extends beyond Nigeria, stressing that Isese is celebrated globally as a symbol of identity and ancestral reverence. He urged Africans not to abandon their roots, noting that every lineage has deities that should be honoured.

“As black people, anyone who turns away from Isese is rejecting the essence of our culture and traditions,” he emphasized.

The priest also highlighted the group’s dedication to order and unity, explaining that they routinely hold meetings across Ogun State and beyond to strengthen discipline and authenticity among practitioners.

“A genuine babalawo is always known by their truthfulness. For those who deviate, we have mechanisms to correct and guide them back,” he explained.

The traditionalists, however, appealed for increased government recognition and partnership, arguing that such support would enable them to contribute more effectively to the promotion of societal values, peace, and harmony.
