Kwara State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, has charged the second batch of students of the College of Health Technology, Offa, to be good ambassadors of their alma mater.
The Commissioner gave the charge during the induction and oath-taking ceremony for the graduates of the Community Health Extension Workers (CHEW) and Junior Community Health Extension Workers (JCHEW) programs. The joint ceremony was held in collaboration with the North South College of Health Technology, Ajase-Ipo, on Thursday at the College of Health Technology, Offa.
She urged the graduating students to strive for excellence in their chosen careers, uphold the ethical standards of the profession, be responsible citizens, and represent their institutions with pride.
“Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the Visitor to the College, is strongly committed to providing an enabling environment for teaching, learning, and research in all state institutions,” she stated.
In his remarks, the Provost of the College, Elder Benjamin Ayanshola, appreciated the State Government for its consistent support in addressing the college’s needs. He also praised the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, for her proactive and progressive approach in advancing tertiary education in the state.
He urged the inductees to fill gaps in child healthcare, combat diseases, and remain committed to their profession while positively impacting the communities they are posted to serve.
Alhaji Abdulganiyu Bolaji, who represented the Registrar/CEO of the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN), Alhaji Bashir Idris Ja’ama, advised the inductees to wear their uniforms with dignity, speak knowledgeably, and serve with commitment.
He emphasized that their primary duty is to protect lives—especially those of mothers and infants—by applying national standards and the knowledge they have acquired.
He further called on state governments to adopt a policy of employing CHEW and JCHEW graduates, noting that “a healthy community depends on well-trained and passionately motivated community health practitioners.”
A lecture was delivered by Adeyemi Titus Friday of the University of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Public Health, Department of Community Health Sciences, Ondo State.
The theme of the lecture was “Empowering a New Generation of Community Health Practitioners for Sustainable Primary Healthcare and National Development.”
He stressed the importance of implementing policies that support the roles of community health practitioners, ensuring they are provided with the necessary resources, recognition, and support to deliver quality healthcare services. He added that empowering these practitioners will promote health education, prevent disease, reduce poverty, and improve national well-being.
Over 200 students from both institutions took the oath, were inducted, and received their certificates and licenses from the Registrar of the Community Health Practitioners Registration Board of Nigeria (CHPRBN).
The Head of the Community Health Department, College of Health Technology, Offa, Mrs. Christianah Olawumi Bamidele—known for her integrity and diligence—expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the program and the conduct of the graduands.
She remarked that “the inductees toiled day and night to reach this point of success. Today’s ceremony is an epoch-making event, and they can compete favorably with their counterparts anywhere in the country.”
