Atiku hints at 2027 Presidential bid, vows tough stance on corruption

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has given a strong indication that he may contest the 2027 presidential election, declaring his commitment to fight corruption if given the mandate.
In a video currently circulating on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Atiku, speaking in Hausa, issued a stern warning to individuals involved in corrupt practices, promising severe consequences should he emerge victorious in the next election.
“I swear to God, if I’m elected, anyone who steals or engages in any corrupt act will face serious punishment. We will wage war against corruption,” Atiku said.
The former PDP presidential candidate, who contested in the 2023 general elections but lost, is now widely believed to be aligning with a new political movement under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition.
Although he has not formally announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku has been actively involved in activities linked to the ADC-led opposition coalition.
The coalition, which aims to present a united front ahead of 2027, recently unveiled its interim leadership, naming former Senate President David Mark as its Interim National Chairman, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as Interim National Secretary.
Atiku’s presence in the coalition has fueled speculation about his political plans, particularly as discussions around 2027 begin to gain momentum.
Political analysts suggest that his recent anti-corruption remarks could be an attempt to rebrand and reinforce his stance on accountability as he positions himself for another presidential run.
While his next political move is yet to be officially declared, Atiku’s growing involvement with the opposition coalition and his strong rhetoric on governance issues indicate that he remains a major player in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
