NNPCL shuts down Port Harcourt refinery for scheduled maintenance

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has confirmed the temporary closure of the Port Harcourt Refining Company for maintenance purposes.
In a statement released on Saturday, the company acknowledged a previous report by Saturday PUNCH, affirming that the facility would be taken offline for one month to carry out planned maintenance operations.
Olufemi Soneye, NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, stated that the shutdown would commence on Saturday, May 24, 2025.
“The Port Harcourt Refining Company will undergo a scheduled maintenance shutdown starting May 24, 2025. This process also includes a sustainability assessment of the facility,” he announced.
Soneye noted that NNPCL is collaborating with relevant agencies, such as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, to ensure that the procedures are carried out effectively and transparently.
He added, “NNPCL remains committed to promoting sustainable energy security in Nigeria. Updates on the maintenance progress will be shared through our official platforms and communication channels.”
Meanwhile, some local fuel marketers in Eleme, where the refinery is located, have expressed dissatisfaction with the shutdown, alleging sabotage by certain officials.
In response, Soneye dismissed the allegations, assuring the public that the closure is part of a planned safety procedure.
He emphasized that while the facility is currently functional, preparations are underway for critical maintenance aimed at ensuring the safe and continuous operation of the plant.
“This scheduled exercise aligns with international safety standards and is expected to last about one month. We have sufficient stockpiles of AGO, kerosene, and other products to ensure supply remains uninterrupted during this period,” he added.
