Gabon’s New President takes oath of office, Nigeria reaffirms commitment to regional stability

Gabon’s democratic journey took a significant step forward as Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was officially sworn in as president, in a ceremony that drew top-level representation from across the African continent, including Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima.

Held at the Stade de l’Amitié sino-gabonaise in Libreville, the event was both a celebration of democratic transition and a show of pan-African solidarity. President Nguema, who had been serving as transitional head of state since the removal of former leader Ali Bongo, emerged victorious in the country’s April 12 presidential election.

Nguema’s inauguration marked the beginning of a new political era in Gabon. In his inaugural speech, the president promised to usher in reforms focused on inclusive governance, national security, and economic revitalization. He pledged to address core challenges such as water access, youth unemployment, and public safety.

“Our administration will prioritize the needs of the people. We will build a nation that thrives on justice, opportunity, and collective strength,” Nguema said, calling for unity across African borders and stronger ties with international development partners.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Shettima led a high-level Nigerian delegation, signaling Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and peaceful transitions on the continent. The delegation also included Hon. Usman Bello Kumo, Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, and Dr. Aliyu Modibbo, Special Adviser to the President.

According to a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Nigeria views Gabon’s successful election as a positive indicator of the region’s democratic resilience.

Beyond symbolic participation, Shettima’s presence reinforced Nigeria’s foreign policy direction under President Tinubu, which emphasizes regional cooperation, conflict prevention, and support for legitimate governance structures across Africa.

The swearing-in ceremony featured rich cultural displays, military processions, and enthusiastic public participation, reflecting Gabon’s anticipation for a new national chapter.

In attendance were several African leaders and ex-presidents, including Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang Nguema, Ghana’s former President John Mahama, and Sierra Leone’s Julius Maada Bio. Their collective presence underlined continental backing for Gabon’s transition and a shared commitment to safeguarding democratic progress in Africa.

The occasion served not only as a ceremonial milestone for Gabon but also as a platform for strengthening intra-African diplomatic bonds amid ongoing efforts to consolidate peace and development across the continent.
