FCT Security Committee to ensure cross-border collaborations

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Security Committee has resolved to strengthen its collaboration with security operatives in neighboring states to prevent the displacement of criminal activities from one state to another ¹. This decision was reached during the committee’s first meeting of the year 2025, chaired by the FCT Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike.

The meeting, which was attended by heads of all security agencies in the FCT, including the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, and other top officials, aimed to address the security challenges facing the capital territory. The committee acknowledged the success of the joint task force, comprising the military, Civil Defence, and the police, in conducting clearance operations in border communities ¹.

FCT Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu disclosed that the committee plans to establish collaborations and operations with security operatives from neighboring states to prevent cross-border banditry. He emphasized the importance of inter-state collaboration, stressing that this unified approach will ensure more effective policing of the region.

The committee also discussed the ongoing profiling of market operators involved in scavenging activities, known as “panteka,” within the FCT. Additionally, they highlighted recent successful operations targeting infrastructure theft, including the recovery of manhole covers and electrical cables.

Other issues addressed during the meeting included harassment and illegal levies imposed on FCT residents by touts operating under the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). The committee assured that operations are being planned to address the issue decisively

The FCT Security Committee reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all residents and assured that security agencies will continue to work diligently to address any emerging threats in the FCT.
