The Federal Government (FG) may reverse its “No work, No Pay” decision to the striking university lecturers.
Similarly, FG may also review some of its hard decisions that have been opposed to, by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, causing the latter to continue its strike in spite of pleas by students, parents and concerned Nigerians.
ASUU has commenced its strike since February 14, 2022, citing nonpayment of outstanding allowances, non release of revitalization, opposition to the FG digital salary payment platform, IPPIS among others.
As a way forward, ASUU, FG representatives, Vice Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors in Federal Universities met today (Tuesday) in Abuja to look at the issues on both sides, with a view find lasting solutions.
In the meantime, the Federal Government FG has constituted yet another committee to look into the recommendations of the Professor Nimi Briggs’ committee in charge of the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement between the government and the university-based staff unions.
The Universities’ unions include: the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, National Association of Academic Technologists NAAT, Association of University Technologists ASUTON
The 14-man committee comprises some pro-chancellors, vice-chancellors and other key stakeholders.
The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, who briefed journalists after the meeting noted that the committee would be chaired by Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.
Adamu inaugurated the 14-man committee to look into the recommendations concerning the resolution of the lingering ASUU strike.
Ben Goong, disclosed that members of the committee include: Professor Olu Obafemi, Professor Nimi Briggs, Udo Udoma, Bashir Dalhatu, Professor Kayode Adebowale,(University of Ibadan) Professor Kabir Bala (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria).
Other members are: Professor Lilian Salami (University of Benin), Professor Charles Igwe (University of Nigeria Nsukka), Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede; Representatives of the Academy of letters, Science, Medicine and social sciences.
