The death of Mr. Godwin Amadin Osariere, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oredo, Edo State, has continued to generate concern among family members, friends and political associates.
Osariere, from Oredo in Benin City, died following events linked to a party executives’ meeting held on October 21, 2022. What was described as a routine gathering has since been portrayed by family sources as the tragic climax of a prolonged internal dispute.
At the centre of the controversy were funds reportedly meant for community development projects in Igueben. According to accounts from relatives, Osariere had disagreed with certain party executives over the handling and disbursement of the money, which was allegedly earmarked for schools, healthcare facilities and road construction.
Family members claim he resisted alleged attempts to divert the funds, insisting they be used strictly for the benefit of the community. His stance, they said, placed him at odds with influential figures within the party.
They further alleged that his refusal to compromise led to his suspension and a series of threats urging him to “back down.” After he was later recalled from suspension, Osariere attended what was termed an “enlarged meeting” of party executives.
It was during this meeting, according to the family’s account, that he was allegedly served poisoned food. He was subsequently rushed to hospital, where he later died.
Stephen Osariere, son of the late politician, reportedly walked into a police station on October 21, 2022, at about 3:00 pm., visibly distressed and seeking protection. According to an official police entry, he stated that his life and those of his family members were under threat.
Since his father’s passing, the family says the atmosphere of intimidation has persisted. They allege that threats and harassment have continued, creating fear within the household as they seek justice over the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident has raised broader concerns within the community about internal party disputes, accountability in public fund management and the safety of political actors involved in contentious issues.
