The Aspirant for Zamfara North Senatorial District, Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, has dragged the All Progressive Congress, APC, to court over a consensus arrangement that returned the serving Senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as the party’s candidate, demanding nullification of the exercise and proper party Primaries.
The Aspirant made known his mission to seek justice at the court of law while addressing journalists in the Federal High Court, Gusau, the state capital.
Shinkafi maintained that the 2027 Senate seat is the turn of Shinkafi, not for Kaura again. He explained that, since the creation of the state, the Kaura people of Zamfara North have been in the position, and now, Ya’u has seen the position as a lifetime entitlement, being there for more than four terms and still insisting on returning as if there is no capable person in Shinkafi to man the senatorial position.
He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the party to consider the cry of the Shinkafi people and give a chance for proper party Primaries.
Speaking, Barr. Bello Galadi said Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkarfi filed a case of Senatorial primary election in Zamfara North senatorial district, challenging the election which brought Serving senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as the substantive elected aspirant for the 2027 election.
Barr. Bello Galadi, council to the plaintiff in this case of Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi explained “We have just filed a case against the APC and INEC over the injustice that has been mated on us by the just concluded screening and primaries for Zamfara North senatorial districts which purportedly held on 19th May 2026 where the APC declared senator Sahabi Ya’u Kaura as the winner of that primary election against the decision of his opponent and against the electoral laws”
Having not been satisfied with that declaration, we feel obligated to appear before this Federal High Court for redress. We have just filed the case, and we expect that the court will administer Justice, rectify the problems, and do Justice that is basically fair.
We are expecting Justice from the court in view of our complaint with evidence before the court. At the end of the day, the court will see where the pendulum swings.
We are hopeful that the pendulum will swing in our favour. Confirming from section 84 of the Electoral Act, which gave guidelines for the consensus.
Two criteria are embedded under that provision. Number one, there has to be a written agreement on the part of the opponent to step down; two, there has to be an endorsement by the aspirant for another candidate. So those twin conditions must go together; they must collectively be satisfied as ingredients for consensus.
Our major concern is that there were no primary elections; we are very much sure.
We are calling on the court to nullify the consensus arrangement entirely in the Zamfara North senatorial zone and reschedule another day for a fresh party Primaries election.
We considered the consensus arrangement at just concluded primary election in Zamfara North senatorial district as null and void and undemocratic. Bello Galadi reiterated.
