The Kano State House of Assembly has called on all Honourable Members representing Northern Nigeria to take decisive action towards the total cancellation of the recently released cadet recruitment list by the Nigeria Customs Service Commission.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai, on Wednesday.
Under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Jibril Ismail Falgore, the House expressed deep dismay over the recruitment exercise, describing it as one that promotes nepotism and regional imbalance.
Despite the vast population of Northern Nigeria, the final list reflects a glaring injustice and a complete disregard for the provisions of the Federal Character Commission.
Presenting the motion during plenary, Majority Leader Hon. Lawal Hussain Dala argued that the recruitment process lacked fairness and transparency, encouraging lopsidedness, division, and bias.
He described the pattern as disheartening and dangerous, citing a clear preference for candidates from the Southern region—particularly the South West—at the expense of Northern Nigeria.
According to the released list, out of a total of 1,785 fresh cadet officers, over 1,000 were reportedly selected from the South, while the North received fewer than 540 slots.
The Kano State House of Assembly further accused the Commission of favouring one region over others in key recruitment decisions.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Falgore urged all Northern representatives in the National Assembly to intervene and halt the exercise in the interest of national unity and cohesion.
He emphasized the need for strict adherence to the Federal Character Commission’s guidelines and called on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to cancel the recruitment exercise, citing its partial and unbalanced nature.
The Kano State House of Assembly unanimously adopted the motion, demanding the total cancellation of the cadet recruitment list released by the Nigeria Customs Service Commission.
