The Anambra North Towns Association in Abuja, has over the weekend organized its first-ever New Yam Festival in the nation’s capital and showcased their rich culture, tradition, as well as encouraged massive Yam production, they are known for, which in turn will go a long way to enhance the economy.
His Majesty, Douglas Onochie Onuora (Eze Umuikolobia), Chairman of the occasion, highlighted the significance of the festival in promoting yam production, economy, and culture.
“We people from Anambra North are known for massive yam production, contributing significantly to the economy of Anambra State, South East, and Nigeria in general. The festival promotes the rich culture of the Igbo race and encourages unity among the people,” he informed.
The Chairman of the association, Dr (Engr) Okechukwu Emmanuel Chikelue commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his efforts in agriculture and urged him to do more to support yam farmers. He said that with more support to his people, Yam will be abundant massively.
Calling for unity and continuation of promoting culture and unity, he said the motto of the association is “Anyi Bu Ofu: Meaning “We Are One,” the motto reflects the unity and solidarity among the members of Anambra North Towns Association,” he stated.
The Chairman who said that he he he is equally a farmer, encouraged people to go into farming, highlighting its potential for economic growth and development.
The Association seeks collaboration with government and private individuals to support yam farmers with technical know-how, inputs, and other resources.
The Mother of the Day, Chief (Mrs) Suzan Okolo hailed the organizers and the large turnout, saying that an event like that will go a long way to promote unity, peace progress, and rich culture of the people, by saying: “The festival contributes to promoting unity and rich culture among the people. The event will highlight the economic benefits of yam production and encourage investment in agriculture.”
Earlier, the Father of the Day, HRH Ikechukwu Nwokechi, the Igweawobo Iruogbo, Dusogu, Awkuzu, Anambra North spoke at length on the need to continue to rekindle culture, even as he urged other Nigerians to emulate his Anambra North in massive production of Yams, which if done, according to him, will go a long way to promote the economy.
