In a bold step toward revolutionizing weather forecasting in Nigeria, a delegation from Swedish tropical weather forecasting company Ignitia, led by Mr. Yen Choi, visited the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in Abuja.
The visit marked the beginning of the implementation phase of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed recently between the two organizr5ations.
Speaking during the meeting, the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, highlighted NiMet’s mandate as Nigeria’s sole legal provider and regulator of weather and climate information. He assured the Ignitia team of NiMet’s readiness to provide access and licensing opportunities to credible private-sector partners.
The collaboration focuses on AI-powered weather prediction, capacity building, and delivering accurate weather advisories to support decision-making—especially for Nigerian farmers. The partnership is expected to enhance agricultural productivity and bolster national climate resilience.
As part of the next steps, both teams agreed to establish a Joint Technical Committee within a month. The committee will be tasked with drafting a detailed roadmap for integrating AI-based forecasting tools into NiMet’s services.
The roadmap will define key phases, outline measurable benchmarks, and set performance indicators to track the impact of the partnership in the coming months.
The NiMet-Ignitia collaboration signals a forward-thinking approach to climate adaptation, putting technology at the forefront of sustainable agriculture in Nigeria.
