Tinubu hails late Awujal as pillar of democracy, Yoruba pride

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, recalled that the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, stood firmly with pro-democracy forces during the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, describing him as a monarch who was never afraid to speak truth to power.
Tinubu who spoke at the 8th-day Fidau for the late monarch in Ijebu-Ode on Sunday, said Oba Adetona’s voice was one that could be trusted in times of political uncertainty.
The President, also praise the late monarch as a pride of the Yoruba race, stating that his influence extended beyond traditional leadership into national affairs.
“Awujale was always there for us. He supported us during the June 12 annulment. He was steadfast and resolute. He was very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful. He would not deceive you.
“He brought dignity to the Yoruba race. Yoruba history would not be complete without the contributions of the Awujale”, Tinubu said.
Tinubu described the revered monarch as a symbol of integrity and bravery who stood by what was right, regardless of the circumstances.
While expressing gratitude to God for granting Oba Adetona a long and impactful life of 91 years, the President commended Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun for his commitment to the monarch’s well-being during his final years.
He urged the people of Ijebuland and the entire state to remain united in preserving the enduring legacies left behind by the late royal father.
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Dapo Abiodun described the Awujale as a moral compass whose reign ushered in a new era of growth and development in Ijebuland.
He noted that Oba Adetona’s reign was marked by cultural pride, selfless service, and advocacy for the underprivileged.
The governor said the late monarch was a unifier who used his influence to foster religious tolerance and social cohesion.
“He was a man of unwavering faith who worked tirelessly to bring people together across religious and ethnic lines,” Abiodun stated.
He called on the people to reflect on the monarch’s life and emulate his virtues of peace, justice, and unity for the continued progress of the state and the nation.
