The Imo Government has collaborated with the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede to fight drug abuse.
The Special Adviser to Gov. Hope Uzodinma on Narcotics and Illicit Drug Trafficking, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna, said this when he visited the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Women Association (FEONOWA), for a sensitization campaign on drug abuse in Owerri.
The theme of the campaign is: “Wellness and Resilience for All”.
Obonna said that the campaign was aimed to educate the institution’s students about the dangers of drug abuse.
He added that according to research, drug abuse is a significant problem among Nigerian youth, with many experimenting with drugs due to curiosity, peer pressure, or stress.
He, however, said that such campaigns help to educate students about the risks associated with drug abuse while promoting wellness and resilience.
“The campaign is a collaborative effort between FEPNOWA, the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, and the Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Narcotics and Illicit Drug Monitoring.
“Sensitization campaigns like this one play a crucial role in raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse, particularly among young people“, he said.
Speaking, FEPNOWA President, Mrs Ijeoma Odoemena, thanked the state government for its commitment to the fight against drug abuse.
She said that the menace had become “a real challenge“ in the country’s higher institutions and pledged an unreserved commitment to the campaign against drug abuse.
The campaign kicked off with a courtesy call to the Polytechnic’s rector, Mrs Basilia Igbokwe, and the Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Paul Christopher.
