Decarbonization supports UN SDGs- 13 Climate Actions -Says NiMASA DG

The Director General, NiMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola has in a welcome address on the two – days of the African strategic on Shipping Decarbonization, which began on Monday the 17th – Tuesday, the 18th, March 2025, at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, refers to “Decarbonization” as efforts to reduce gas emissions from the shipping industry which is a significant contribution to global emissions.
According to him, the shipping industry accounts for approximately 3% of global GHD emissions contribution to climate change.
Standard-Times reports that these environmental concerns arising from the emissions have created a sense of urgency driving the world to focus on Shipping Decarbonization and Africa must not be left behind.
The Director General of NiMASA further stressed that the decarbonization supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, UN- SDGs, particularly SDGs- 13, and climate action.
This African Strategic Summit has brought together experts, regulators, and stakeholders to discuss best practices, share knowledge, and exchange experiences that ensure a just and equitable shipping decarbonization in Africa by promoting sustainable maritime development”, DG remarks.
During this summit we will engage in constructive dialogue and explore opportunities for collaboration and corporations”, He added.
Our discussions will focus on IMOGHG- reduction strategy and the basket of middle-term measures, the journey so far, and the future of African maritime industry” he states.
Additionally, he mentioned a just and equitable transition for Africa, political and strategic negotiating skills, and driving strategic negotiations with empirical data.

Lastly, he added the Africa road map to the intersectional working group, ICWD – 19 and NEPC 83 and beyond.
Dr. Dayo Mobereola who expressed honor for the presence of the International Maritime Organization – IMO, and IMO – NEPC Chairman, Dr. Harry, maintained that IMO – International Maritime Organization, has been diligently working to achieve a globally harmonized decarbonized shipping industry ensuring no one is left behind in the Energy Transition, particularly developing countries, mixed developing countries and small island developing states.
Dr. Dayo took the opportunity to acknowledge the principal investigator of the Leap Project, Dr. Dora Olutoye for her outstanding work and contributions along a numerous experts who gathered at the summit
