NSCDC deployed officers ahead of NLC protest against telecom tariff increase

Authorities have intensified security measures as the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) insists on proceeding with its planned strike over the recent increase in telecommunications tariffs.
In a bid to prevent disruptions, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has urged the NLC to reconsider the protest.
They warned that shutting down telecom services could have serious economic consequences.
NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi confirmed that security personnel have been stationed at key telecommunications facilities to prevent any unauthorized interference.
He emphasized that the corps, responsible for protecting lives and critical infrastructure, would not allow actions that could compromise national security.
Citing intelligence reports, Afolabi expressed concerns that the protest might be hijacked by criminal elements, potentially leading to unrest.
While acknowledging the right to peaceful demonstrations, he stressed that past protests had escalated into security threats, necessitating proactive measures.
The NSCDC reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining order while urging the NLC to explore alternative ways of expressing its grievances without jeopardizing national stability.
