Economic disaster hits dry season farmers in Mokwa LGA in Niger

TUNDE BOLAJI- MINNA.

Dry season farmers around the Mokwa local government area of Niger state and its environment are now counting their losses  with the economic disaster that has taken over their farmlands

This incident highlights the devastating impact of the water discharge from the Kainji and Jebba hydropower plants on the livelihoods of dry-season farmers along the River Niger.

The sudden flooding has wiped out rice farms worth billions of naira, affecting both indigenous and visiting farmers in communities such as Rabba, Lafiyagi, and the Kede District of Mokwa Local Government Area.

Many of these farmers, who have already faced challenges due to seasonal flooding, have resorted to dry-season farming.

Unfortunately, the unexpected release of excess water has destroyed their crops, leaving them in dire financial straits, especially as many relied on loans to fund their farming activities.

The affected communities are urgently appealing to the Niger State Government, the management of Kainji and Jebba Hydro Power plants, and the HydroPower Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPADEC) for immediate intervention and support to recover from the disaster.

This is a critical moment where coordinated action is needed to prevent further economic loss and hardship for these farmers.
