14-Year-Old emerges winner of Mathematics Competition, Ex-winner bags fully funded scholarship in Oyo

In an impressive display of academic prowess, Akinwande Jamaldeen, a 14-year-old SS2 student of Best Legacy International School, on Thursday, emerged as the winner of the prestigious annual Mathematics Competition presented by Ramtaq Consulting and Development and sponsored by Engineer Idris Adeoye.

The second edition of Engineer Idris Adeoye’s Mathematics quiz Competition held at Sr. Mary Callista Hall, Saint Bernardine’s Girls Grammar School in Oyo, featured 72 schools from various public and private secondary schools across the four LGAs of Oyo zone (Afijio, Atiba, Oyo East, and Oyo West).

Jamaldeen claimed the top spot by scoring 40 out of 50 in the Mathematics quiz, securing a cash prize of ₦300,000. Aleem Aisha of Fiditi Grammar School and AbdulRaheem Abubakar of EAUED Model High School finished second and third, earning ₦200,000 and ₦100,000 respectively.

During the event, Engineer Akeem emphasized that the cash prizes are strictly intended to support the students’ further education, not for the schools they represent. He clarified, “The money won by these students is to be used to sponsor their university education. Last year’s prize was used to pay for the winner’s university fees.”

Dr. Ayobami Sanda Ladigbolu, director of Ramtaq Consulting and Development and event anchor, gave a word of advice to the students, urging them to stay focused on their studies and resist the temptation to engage in cybercrime or “Yahoo Yahoo.”

His message resonated with the audience, particularly at a time when academic achievements can lead to life-changing opportunities.

One such example is Adeniran Filiph Ajibola, the winner of last year’s (2023) competition, who has now secured a fully funded scholarship courtesy of the Wife of Engineer Idris Adeoye.

Filiph, a Computer Engineering student at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), excelled in his 100-level studies with an impressive GPA of 4.90 out of 5.0. He revealed that the ₦250,000 prize he won in 2023 helped him cover his 100-level first-semester tuition fees, hostel accommodations, and some academic materials.

In his appreciation message, Filiph expressed deep gratitude to his benefactors and encouraged younger students to seize every opportunity, using it as a platform for future success. “Do not take any opportunity for granted. Use it as a stepping stone to reach greater heights in your academic journey,” he advised.

The wife of Engineer Adeoye, moved by Filiph’s academic success, promised to further sponsor his education, reinforcing the idea that hard work and dedication can open doors to greater opportunities for young students in Oyo and beyond.

The atmosphere was filled with inspiration and hope as the organizers encouraged the 69 other participants with 5,000 naira each. Students and parents alike celebrated the importance of education and the possibilities it holds for the future
