Police arraigns Scavenger, 21, over alleged attempt to steal generator
A 21-year-old scavenger, Shafiu Lawali, was on Thursday arraigned before a Kado Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja for allegedly attempting to steal a generator valued at N130, 000.
Lawali who resides at Utako Village, FCT Abuja, is standing trial for attempting to commit an offence of theft.
The prosecutor, Stanley Nwafoaku told the court that Lawaliwas arrested on Jan. 22, on a tip-off by a police team led by Sabastine Titus of Ambush Department, Utako.
Nwafoaku alleged that the defendant was arrested at Utakovillage, opposite the Chief’s palace while attempting to steal a 5 KVA Sumec generator valued N130, 000.
The prosecutor said that during police investigation, the defendant confessed to the crime.
He said that the offence contravened sections 95 of the penal code.
The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Presiding Judge, Muhammed Wakili, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum.
Wakili ordered that the surety must be reliable with a means of livelihood and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court.
He said that the surety must also provide a BVN print out, recent passport photograph and a valid identification card, which must be verified by the court registrar.
The Judge adjourned the matter until March.14, for hearing.
