Nations League: Portugal beat Norway 2-1 to secure Quarter-Final spot

Portugal became the first side to book a place in the Nations League quarter-finals after recovering from a goal down to defeat Norway 2-1 in Porto on Sunday.

Norway took a surprise lead in the 36th minute when Kristoffer Ajer produced a superb curling finish into the top corner.

Portugal responded almost immediately, with Joao Cancelo levelling the contest just two minutes later. The defender controlled Nuno Mendes’ throw-in before firing a first-time effort from the edge of the box past goalkeeper Egil Selvik.

The hosts pushed for a second after the break, with Cancelo coming close again, while Norway captain Erling Haaland missed his only clear opportunity after dragging his effort wide.

Haaland was surprisingly substituted shortly afterwards as Portugal continued to increase the pressure. Ruben Neves then missed a good chance when he sliced his close-range effort over the crossbar.

Portugal eventually completed the comeback in the 86th minute, when Joao Felix created the opening for Goncalo Ramos, who calmly finished to put Jorge Jesus’ side ahead.

The victory maintained Portugal’s perfect start to their Nations League Group A4 campaign, while Ramos continued his impressive international break with his third goal.

Portugal were forced to defend their advantage with 10 men after Francisco Conceicao received two yellow cards in quick succession for dissent. Despite the late setback and further drama involving Norway’s bench, the hosts held on to claim all three points and secure their place in the knockout stage.
