Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to remain united and cohesive as the union prepares for its leadership transition.
The Governor made the call on Thursday in Birnin Kebbi when the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, led other members of the union’s National Executive Council on a courtesy visit to the Kebbi State Government House.
Governor Idris thanked the NLC leadership for associating the Congress with Kebbi State, stressing the need to preserve the spirit of unity that binds the labour movement together.
“Don’t allow any factor to divide the union. Jealously guard this movement,” he urged the labour leadership.
He also called on the NLC leadership to ensure a peaceful and successful transition, with a smooth handover to the next leadership.
The Governor described the Kebbi State Government House as the union’s “second home,” and welcomed the NLC to continue to hold its meetings and other activities in the state.
Governor Idris noted that the NLC represents not only workers but Nigerians in general, and therefore urged members to maintain unity of purpose in advancing the interests of the country.
“Go round and see for yourself. We have transformed Kebbi State, and this we will continue to do up to the time we leave office,” the Governor assured.
He observed that some people had opportunities to assist their people and make meaningful contributions to their development but failed to utilise such opportunities.
Governor Idris further expressed his ambition to see Kebbi State rank among the five best states in Nigeria in terms of labour welfare and support for union activities.
Earlier, the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said the delegation was in Kebbi State for the union’s National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting.
“Our coming to Kebbi is homecoming.” Ajaero stated.
He described Kebbi as one of the few Government Houses that the NLC considers its own, and thanked Governor Idris for the warm reception accorded the delegation.
“We are comfortable here. We are more at home. We are proud to be associated with Kebbi,” the NLC President added.
