TCN demisses AEDC claims of 330KV transmission lines tripping, blames Abuja power shortage on low generation

By: Goodluck E.Adubazi, Abuja.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has dismissed claims by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) that the reduction in its power allocation was caused by the tripping of 330kV transmission lines supplying Abuja from the Shiroro Transmission Substation.

TCN, in a statement issued on Wednesday, described the claim as “inaccurate and misleading,” insisting that the reduction in AEDC’s allocation was caused by low electricity generation on the national grid.

AEDC had, in a publication dated August 26, 2026, informed its customers of prevailing electricity supply constraints and attributed the reduction in its allocation from approximately 641 megawatts (MW) to 314MW partly to the alleged tripping of transmission lines supplying Abuja from Shiroro.

However, TCN said all 330kV transmission lines within the Abuja Region were currently in service and that there had been no tripping of the transmission lines supplying the Abuja axis.
“Contrary to the information contained in AEDC’s publication, all 330kV transmission lines within Abuja Region are currently in circuit, and no such tripping of the 330kV transmission lines supplying Abuja axis, as alleged by AEDC, has occurred,” TCN said.

The company stressed that the reduction in AEDC’s allocation, as well as the resulting load shedding across its feeders, could not be attributed to any alleged tripping of TCN’s 330kV transmission lines within the Abuja Region.

TCN urged stakeholders and electricity distribution companies to ensure accurate and clear dissemination of information, particularly on issues affecting electricity supply to consumers.

The transmission company reaffirmed its commitment to efficiently transmitting available bulk electricity across the country and maintaining the stability, reliability and integrity of Nigeria’s transmission grid.

The statement was signed by the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria on August 26, 2026.
