1. All abducted victims have regained their freedom
The Federal Government confirmed that all the pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued by security agencies after spending weeks in captivity.
2. The abduction happened on May 15, 2026
Armed men attacked three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire LGA, carrying out one of the most shocking school attacks in Oyo State.
3. Forty-six people were kidnapped
The gunmen abducted 39 pupils and seven teachers, including a school principal, during the coordinated attacks.
4. Eight suspected kidnappers were arrested
According to the Presidency, eight members of the kidnapping gang were arrested during the rescue operation and are currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
5. Some kidnappers were killed
The Presidency also disclosed that several members of the criminal gang were neutralised during the rescue mission.
6. No ransom or prisoner swap was made
Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the government did not make any concession or exchange to secure the victims’ freedom.
7. The alleged kingpin remains in custody
The terrorist suspect whose release was reportedly demanded by the kidnappers was not freed and is still being prosecuted for terrorism-related offences.
8. The victims endured weeks in captivity
The pupils and teachers remained in the kidnappers’ custody for several weeks before security agencies secured their release.
9. The incident claimed two teachers’ lives
One teacher was killed during the attack, while another was later beheaded by the kidnappers in a video that sparked nationwide outrage.
