Medical services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, may be partially disrupted following the commencement of a three-day warning strike by resident doctors over growing concerns about security within the hospital premises.

The industrial action, which began on Thursday, June 4, 2026, was declared by the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), FMC Abeokuta, after an emergency general meeting convened to address a recent burglary at the House Officers’ Quarters.

In a communique issued after the meeting, the doctors said they unanimously resolved to embark on the strike in protest against recurring security lapses that they believe have continued to put healthcare workers and their property at risk.

The decision was triggered by a recent break-in at the residential quarters, during which intruders reportedly stole several personal belongings belonging to medical personnel. The stolen items included five mobile phones, a laptop computer, cash, and a driver’s licence.

According to the association, the incident reflects a broader pattern of inadequate security within the hospital environment and has heightened fears among doctors residing on the premises.

The ARD, in a communique addressed to the Medical Director of FMC Abeokuta, described the situation as a serious threat to the welfare and safety of healthcare workers. The association expressed dissatisfaction with what it termed repeated security breaches and the absence of effective preventive measures.

As a result, members resolved to withdraw their services from June 4 to June 6, 2026, pending concrete assurances from hospital management on steps being taken to strengthen security.

Among the demands presented to management are the replacement of items stolen during the burglary, the engagement of a more competent security service provider, and the installation of adequate lighting around the hospital and residential quarters.

The doctors also called for the deployment of functional CCTV cameras at strategic locations, the posting of armed security personnel, and the establishment of a fully operational police post within or near the residential quarters.

Other requests include improved perimeter fencing to restrict unauthorized access and regular security patrols, particularly during nighttime hours.

Despite the strike action, the association reiterated its commitment to maintaining a cordial relationship with hospital management, stressing that the safety and welfare of healthcare workers are essential to the effective delivery of quality healthcare services.

The communique was jointly signed by the ARD President, Dr. Olanipekun Quadri Arise-Kola, and the Assistant General Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Alawode, who urged management to take immediate action to address the concerns and prevent future security breaches.
