Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has raised concerns over the handling of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election nomination forms, criticising the involvement of third parties in the process.
Sowore’s remarks came after the Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi, reportedly signed Tinubu’s presidential nomination forms, said to cost ₦100 million.
In a statement released on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, Umahi described the move as a show of commitment to continuity and consolidation of the administration’s achievements.
He characterised the nomination process as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s development, reflecting a collective resolve to sustain stability and build on existing progress.
Umahi highlighted the administration’s efforts in infrastructure, particularly in road construction and rehabilitation, noting that such initiatives are vital to economic growth. He maintained that Tinubu is well-positioned to complete ongoing projects and further advance development across sectors, urging Nigerians to support consistent leadership to achieve long-term national objectives.
However, reacting via his verified X account, Sowore questioned why the president’s nomination forms were being completed in his absence. He suggested that the arrangement could be an attempt to distance Tinubu from potential controversies surrounding the documentation, especially issues relating to his qualifications.
“Why is someone always filling Tinubu’s election forms for him when he isn’t there?” Sowore asked, expressing scepticism over the process and its implications.
