A tragic hit-and-run incident has once again exposed the deadly recklessness on Lagos roads, as a dispatch rider was crushed to death by a fully loaded diesel tanker along the busy Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed that the horrifying crash occurred under the Cele Bridge corridor, where the tanker, identified as a HOWO diesel truck, reportedly rammed violently into the unsuspecting rider.

According to an official statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, the impact was so severe that the victim became trapped beneath the heavy-duty vehicle, dying instantly at the scene in what officials described as a gruesome and avoidable tragedy.

Eyewitness accounts and security reports indicated that the tanker showed no sign of slowing down before ploughing into the motorcycle, raising fresh concerns about brake failure, driver negligence, or possible mechanical faults.

In the immediate aftermath, LASTMA officials swiftly moved to contain the chaos, cordoning off the crash site with cones and caution tape to prevent further accidents in the already congested corridor.

Despite the swift emergency response, the most shocking twist came when the tanker driver reportedly fled the scene, disappearing before law enforcement could apprehend him—an action that has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stricter enforcement against reckless drivers.

Authorities confirmed that the tanker has since been impounded, while operatives from the Ijesha Police Division have taken over the investigation to track down the fleeing suspect and unravel the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The remains of the deceased rider were later recovered from beneath the tanker in a disturbing operation and transported to a morgue in Yaba, leaving behind grieving relatives and stunned colleagues.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the development as deeply distressing and unacceptable, stressing that such tragedies must not be allowed to continue unchecked.

He urged the police to carry out a thorough and uncompromising investigation, ensuring that justice is served and that the fleeing driver is brought to book without delay.

The incident has reignited public anger over the persistent menace of hit-and-run drivers in Lagos, especially those operating heavy-duty trucks on major highways with little regard for human life.

Road safety advocates are now calling for stricter monitoring systems, including real-time tracking of articulated vehicles, mandatory driver profiling, and stiffer penalties for offenders who abandon accident scenes.

For many Lagos residents, this latest tragedy is not just another statistic but a painful reminder of the daily risks faced by commuters navigating the city’s chaotic transport system.

As investigations continue, authorities say no stone will be left unturned in ensuring accountability, while the hunt for the runaway driver intensifies.
