Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has warned that Nigeria’s security crisis has deteriorated to levels worse than conditions in some countries at war.
Obi spoke in reaction to reports that suspected terrorists killed about 150 residents in coordinated attacks on communities in Kwara State.
Describing the incident as a national tragedy, Obi said the persistent loss of innocent lives reflects a deep failure of governance.
According to him, insecurity has become an existential threat that must be addressed with urgency and seriousness.
He noted that the attacks in Woro and Nuku communities fit a disturbing national pattern of unchecked violence.
“I am deeply saddened by the recent killings in Kwara State,” Obi said, stressing that such bloodshed is unacceptable in any society.
The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigeria’s situation now rivals, and in some cases exceeds, the horrors seen in active war zones.
“These recurring acts of violence, now worse than what occurs in some countries at war, demand that we declare total war on insecurity,” he stated.
Obi urged security agencies to act decisively, apprehend perpetrators and restore public confidence.
He also extended condolences to the families of victims and the people of Kwara State.
