French Ligue 1 club Monaco are set to terminate Paul Pogba’s contract following a difficult spell marked by injuries, the club announced on Wednesday.
Pogba, 33, joined Monaco with hopes of rebuilding his career after a challenging period that included a doping suspension and a prolonged struggle to regain his previous form.
However, the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder has been unable to consistently contribute because of recurring fitness problems.
Monaco said the objectives agreed upon when Pogba joined the club had been “only partially achieved”, leading to the decision to end his contract despite the original agreement running until June 2027.
The France international is currently recovering from a thigh injury, having only recently returned from a separate knee problem.
Pogba’s career has been severely disrupted since he was banned from football after testing positive for a prohibited substance. Although he later returned to competitive football, injuries have continued to limit his involvement.
Despite the decision to part ways, Monaco praised the midfielder’s attitude and professionalism during his time with the club.
The French side highlighted Pogba’s determination and standards, adding that even while sidelined, he contributed positively to the squad by sharing his experience and knowledge with younger players.
