‘This Argument Is Pointless’ — Femi Kuti blasts Wizkid–Fela comparison as national distraction

Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti has outright rejected comparisons between Wizkid and his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, warning that Nigeria has far bigger crises than celebrity supremacy debates.

Speaking on Arise Television, Femi said he regretted the emergence of the argument and refused to participate, calling it a waste of national energy.

His comments followed Wizkid’s viral statement claiming superiority over Fela — a remark that reignited generational tensions within Nigeria’s music space.

Ironically, the debate gained momentum just as Fela was nominated for a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a recognition that underscored his enduring global influence.

Femi stressed that Fela remains the template of Nigerian music, insisting that no contemporary artiste should be placed in competition with him.

He further lamented Nigeria’s stagnation, noting that the corruption, insecurity and social injustice Fela sang about decades ago have only intensified, urging Nigerians to channel global recognition of Afrobeats into nation-building rather than online warfare.
