‘Feel Free to idolise, don’t compare’ — Femi Kuti shuts down Wizkid vs Fela debate

Femi Kuti has weighed into the raging Wizkid–Fela comparison, calling the entire controversy misguided and insisting that his late father should never be dragged into modern popularity contests.
The Grammy-nominated musician spoke after Wizkid sparked outrage by declaring himself “bigger” than Fela while clashing with Seun Kuti and his fans over legacy and influence.
Speaking from Los Angeles during an Arise TV interview, Femi expressed disappointment that the issue resurfaced at all, stressing that both Wizkid and Seun are close to him personally.
He described the debate as a distraction from Nigeria’s deeper struggles, arguing that young artistes should focus more on governance, justice and social responsibility rather than ego-driven rivalries.
According to Femi, Fela occupies a sacred, untouchable space in Nigerian music history, serving as the artistic and ideological foundation upon which today’s stars thrive.
He added that Fela should be idolised and respected, not compared, as he prepares to receive his father’s posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
