Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, on Wednesday launched the Ogun State chapter of the Iru Ekun Security Network, as part of efforts to strengthen community-based security and tackle criminal activities across the state.
The launch, held in Abeokuta, attracted supporters and members of the security network, with Igboho reiterating his commitment to working with relevant authorities to improve the safety of residents, particularly in rural communities.
Iru Ekun, which was founded by Igboho, is designed as a community-based security initiative focused on intelligence gathering, crime prevention and support for efforts against kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities. The network has previously been launched in Oyo and Osun states, with operations also extended to other parts of the South-West.
Igboho said the initiative is intended to complement, rather than replace, the work of conventional security agencies. He has also called for cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the military and other relevant authorities in the fight against insecurity.
The development comes amid growing attention to community based security initiatives across the South West. In July, Igboho said more than 80,000 volunteers had registered with Iru Ekun across the region, although such figures remain claims by the organisation and have not been independently verified.
The launch also comes ahead of broader consultations involving traditional rulers and security stakeholders in the South-West. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional rulers have been involved in discussions on strengthening security and collaboration with local initiatives such as Iru Ekun.
Igboho urged members of the network to operate within the law and cooperate with established security agencies, stressing that the ultimate objective should be the protection of communities and residents across the region.
The Ogun launch marks another step in the expansion of Iru Ekun as Igboho seeks greater community participation in efforts to address insecurity in the South West.
