Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced plans by the Ogun State Government to carry out a comprehensive power audit aimed at determining the state’s actual electricity consumption and improving the efficiency of power distribution.
Abiodun disclosed this during an unscheduled inspection of the 4-megawatt gas-fired Independent Power Plant located in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Wednesday.
The governor explained that the audit would help the government monitor how electricity generated from the plant is distributed, while also identifying leakages, wastage, and energy theft within the system.
According to him, the exercise became necessary following the state’s increased authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.
He stressed that stable electricity remains critical to industrial growth and economic development, noting that the 4-megawatt facility, established under the Ogun State Light-Up Project, is part of efforts to achieve energy sufficiency across the state.
Abiodun further revealed that both the Oke-Mosan plant and the 34-megawatt power facility at Onijanganjangan were designed with expansion capacity, adding that the state government has already upgraded power distribution infrastructure to improve service delivery.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply for residents and businesses, saying the ongoing reforms in the power sector are targeted at attracting investors and boosting economic activities.
“What you see here behind me is a gas-fired Independent Power Plant currently generating four megawatts. It doesn’t get cleaner than this,” he said.
“This installation aligns with our promise to deliver on our commitments. We do not just make promises; we fulfil them without unnecessary noise.
“You cannot compare this with some power plants that have remained idle for over 16 years and still rely on fuel oil. It is unacceptable that such outdated systems were procured in the 21st century,” the governor added.
Abiodun also disclosed that the newly inaugurated Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission would supervise electricity generation, transmission, and distribution across the state.
He said the government’s long-term vision is to make Ogun the preferred destination for investors by guaranteeing affordable and reliable 24-hour power supply.
“Ogun State already enjoys several comparative and competitive advantages, but our goal is to position the state as a place where investors are assured of uninterrupted electricity at the most affordable rate in Nigeria,” he stated.
