After 76 years of operations in Nigeria, Guinness Nigeria Plc says its brand has become deeply rooted in the country through sustained corporate social responsibility initiatives, ethical business conduct, responsible drinking campaigns, healthcare interventions, education support, and community development programmes.
The Corporate and Legal Representative of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Rotimi Odusola, stated this during a media parley in Lagos, where he highlighted the company’s long-standing commitment to responsible corporate citizenship and social impact across Nigeria.
Odusola said Guinness Nigeria’s operations have consistently been guided by integrity, accountability, and responsible business practices since the company commenced operations in the country more than seven decades ago.
According to him, the company’s philosophy is anchored on ethical conduct and corporate governance, stressing that Guinness Nigeria maintains strict standards for employees, directors, distributors, and vendors.
“One of the things that we say in this organisation is that there is no right way to do the wrong thing,” he stated.
He explained that all employees, directors, distributors, and vendors associated with Guinness Nigeria are required to subscribe annually to the company’s code of business ethics as part of efforts to sustain transparency and accountability across its operations.
Odusola disclosed that Guinness Nigeria remains one of the few quoted companies on the Nigerian Exchange participating in the Corporate Governance Rating System, while also being a pioneer member of the Convention on Business Integrity.
According to him, the Guinness brand has become deeply integrated into Nigerian society not only because of its products but also because of its commitment to improving lives and supporting communities.
He said the company places strong emphasis on the social component of Environmental, Social and Governance principles, particularly through responsible alcohol consumption initiatives and anti-drink-driving campaigns.
Odusola revealed that Guinness Nigeria has maintained collaborations with the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute, and other industry stakeholders to promote responsible drinking habits among Nigerians.
According to him, Guinness Nigeria has consistently conducted anti-drunk-driving campaigns with the FRSC for more than 20 years, except during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He added that the company recently partnered with the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute to incorporate responsible drinking and anti-drunk-driving education into the curriculum for new drivers in Lagos State.
“We believe people who are just entering the driving community should understand early enough that drinking and driving do not go together,” he said.
Odusola further highlighted the company’s healthcare interventions through the Guinness Eye Hospitals located at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital.
He explained that Guinness Nigeria established the facilities and has sustained annual financial support and equipment donations to both hospitals for more than 30 years.
According to him, the company also sponsored free cataract surgeries for indigent patients as part of activities commemorating its 75th anniversary celebration.
Odusola disclosed that 75 patients each benefited from the free cataract surgeries at both hospitals.
On education support, he said Guinness Nigeria remains heavily invested in scholarship programmes for students in public tertiary institutions studying Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics-related courses.
He explained that the scholarship initiative has also been expanded to include students living with disabilities, including beneficiaries from the School for the Blind in Oshodi, Lagos.
According to him, eight visually impaired students are currently benefiting from the Guinness Nigeria scholarship scheme.
He noted that beneficiaries remain on the scholarship programme throughout the duration of their academic studies until graduation.
Odusola further disclosed that about 80 students are currently under the Guinness Nigeria scholarship scheme nationwide.
He added that the initiative has also been extended to children of workers employed by partner organisations providing services such as security, logistics, and operational support to the company.
According to him, several children of drivers, security personnel, and other support staff linked to Guinness Nigeria’s partner businesses are currently benefiting from the scholarship programme.
Speaking on industry recognition, Odusola said the company’s sustainability initiatives, corporate governance standards, workplace safety culture, and social responsibility efforts have continued to attract awards and recognitions from government agencies and industry stakeholders.
He disclosed that Guinness Nigeria’s Benin brewery recently received a special workplace safety recognition award from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Odusola added that the company has also received several recognitions in 2025 and early 2026 for its contributions to sustainability, ethical business practices, corporate governance, and community development.
He reaffirmed Guinness Nigeria’s commitment to sustaining responsible business practices while continuing to create lasting social impact across Nigerian communities.
