The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken a major step toward improving members’ welfare and professional efficiency with the commissioning of a free Wi-Fi facility at its secretariat.

The project, donated by philanthropist and community leader, Chief Olalekan Gbenga Oso, was officially inaugurated on Monday to enhance internet access and support modern journalism practice across the state.

Speaking during the commissioning, Chief Oso explained that the initiative is aimed at equipping journalists with reliable access to digital tools, research materials, and online platforms required for effective reporting.

He emphasized that strengthening the capacity of media practitioners is essential to societal development and the sustenance of democracy, while pledging continued support for the union.
The donor, who holds the titles of Asiwaju of Owu Akinale and Asiwaju Bobaselu of Awori Ota, described the gesture as a modest effort to contribute to the growth of journalism.

He reaffirmed his commitment to partnering with the NUJ and supporting initiatives that advance the profession.

In the Ogun NUJ Chairman’s remark, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, praised Chief Oso as a consistent supporter of the media, describing the intervention as both timely and unprecedented. He noted that Abeokuta holds a historic place in Nigeria’s media evolution as the birthplace of the country’s first newspaper, adding that investments in journalism within the state help sustain that legacy.

Olanrewaju revealed that this is the first time the council will provide free internet access to its members at the secretariat. He expressed gratitude to the donor and voiced confidence that the development would further deepen the relationship between the NUJ and Chief Oso.

The Wi-Fi initiative also forms part of activities marking Chief Oso’s 50th birthday celebration, scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
