Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, came alive on Saturday as sons and daughters of Egbaland gathered in large numbers to celebrate the 2026 Lisabi Day, a cultural festival held in honour of the legendary Egba hero, Lisabi Agbongbo Akala.
The annual celebration, which attracts dignitaries in Nigeria and the diaspora. over 50 countries were in attendance, the event showcased the rich cultural heritage, unity, and enduring traditions of the Egba people.
Festivities began with a colourful parade of cultural groups, various communities and community associations, all adorned in vibrant traditional attires, Aso-Oke and particularly the popular Adire fabric, symbolising the pride and identity of Egbaland.
The streets of Abeokuta were filled with music, drumming, horse riding and dance as participants paid homage to Lisabi’s bravery and legacy.
Speaking at the event, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, described Lisabi as a symbol of courage, unity, and resistance against oppression, urging the younger generation to uphold the values he stood for.
“Lisabi remains a rallying point for the Egba people. His legacy teaches us the importance of unity, bravery, and self-determination,” the monarch said.
Also in attendance were top government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and prominent sons and daughters of Egbaland, who commended the organisers for sustaining the cultural heritage through the annual festival.
One of the major highlights of the celebration was the traditional homage at the Lisabi shrine, which took place in the cause of the weeks event, where prayers and rites were performed in honour of the hero. This was followed by cultural displays, including traditional wrestling, music performances, and exhibitions of local crafts.
Residents and visitors alike expressed excitement over the event, noting that Lisabi Day continues to serve as a platform for promoting tourism and boosting the local economy.
Security was visibly enhanced across key locations in the city, ensuring a peaceful and hitch-free celebration.
