Russia sparks Paralympic fury with first medal in 12 years

Russia’s return to the Paralympic podium has reignited controversy after Varvara Voronchikhina claimed bronze in the women’s downhill at the Winter Games in Cortina.

The medal marks Russia’s first since the 2014 Winter Paralympics, but it comes amid backlash over the country’s participation while the war in Ukraine continues.

Several nations boycotted the opening ceremony, and the Russian delegation faced boos from spectators. After years of bans and neutral-flag appearances following the invasion of Ukraine, Voronchikhina celebrated the return of her country’s flag, a moment that has sharply divided opinion across the Paralympic community.
