The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, on Friday, December 12, 2025, held its annual Christmas Carol at the NUJ FCT Council, Abuja, using the occasion to reaffirm journalism’s role as a force for truth, justice, and peace in a deeply divided world.
The event, themed “Spreading Truth, Sharing Peace,” brought together journalists, media executives, policymakers, and guests from across the FCT, highlighting the profession’s influence on national development and social cohesion.
In her welcome address, NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, praised journalists for standing as advocates for justice and amplifiers of voices that drive governance and development.
“You are not just journalists,” Ike told attendees. “You are truth tellers and peace makers. Through your voices, you have driven national development and advocated for justice throughout 2025.”
She described the media as a guiding light in difficult times, noting that truth—like light—has the power to overcome darkness.
“Journalists have carried the burden of truth this year—reporting, advocating, and amplifying voices that strengthen our nation,” she said. “From capacity-building trainings that sharpened our skills to collaborative engagements that strengthened partnerships, your dedication has been remarkable.”
Comrade Ike emphasized that responsible journalism should heal rather than divide society, urging media professionals to remain committed to ethical reporting.
“We spread truth not to divide, but to heal and unite our communities,” she said. “Just as Christ brought peace to the world, let this Christmas renew our commitment to sharing peace in our homes, newsrooms, and communities.”
She also expressed appreciation to partners and stakeholders for their support throughout 2025. She called for stronger collaboration in 2026, noting that journalists’ resilience amid professional and economic challenges continues to inspire leadership within the union.
The Christmas Carol featured musical performances and presentations by media organizations including Voice of Nigeria (VON), the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel.
The event drew several dignitaries, including SDP FCT Chairman and candidate Obinna Simon, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education from Bayelsa State, among others.
A Bible reading from Luke 2:8–10, delivered by the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), reflected on the message of hope and peace at the heart of the Christmas season.
Looking Ahead to 2026
As journalists joined in carols and reflections, the NUJ FCT leadership expressed hope for a healthier, stronger union and greater professional impact in the coming year.
“May the Prince of Peace bless our union with good health, breakthroughs, and deeper impact in 2026,” Comrade Ike said.
The evening closed with a shared commitment among members to uphold truth, promote peace, and strengthen journalism’s role in Nigeria’s democratic and development journey.
