The National Orientation Agency (NOA), Akwa Ibom State Directorate, has reaffirmed its commitment to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in mobilizing citizens for active participation in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the state.
The resolve was made known during a courtesy visit by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Barr. Obo Effanga, to the office of the State Director of NOA, Mr. Mkpoutom Mkpoutom, in Uyo.
The visit, according to both agencies, was aimed at strengthening collaboration and appreciating NOA’s role in sensitizing the public on voter registration and democratic participation.
In his remarks, Mr. Mkpoutom, Mkpoutom emphasized that the right to vote is a cornerstone of democracy, empowering citizens to elect leaders who represent their hopes and aspirations.
“In every democratic society, the right to vote is foundational. It empowers citizens to choose leaders who reflect their needs and aspirations. INEC plays a crucial role in upholding this principle through initiatives like the Continuous Voter Registration exercise,” he stated.
He explained that the CVR exercise is designed to ensure the inclusion of all eligible Nigerians in the electoral process and called on civil society groups, community leaders, media organizations, and the general public to actively support INEC’s efforts.
“We must all work together to ensure that every eligible citizen registers and participates in choosing those who govern them,” Mkpoutom added.
Responding, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Barr. Obo Effanga, commended the NOA for its consistent partnership and grassroots sensitization efforts across Akwa Ibom State.
He noted that the Agency’s extensive structures and trained personnel have been instrumental in promoting civic education, peace, and public awareness of government policies and democratic responsibilities.
“NOA has remained a reliable partner in advancing electoral education and mobilizing citizens. Their support helps INEC actualize its mandate of conducting credible and inclusive elections,” the REC said.
Barr. Effanga further explained that the Continuous Voter Registration is vital to ensuring a credible and representative democracy, as it allows new voters to register and enables the updating of voter information.
“The CVR process provides an opportunity for new voters to be captured and for those whose records have changed, due to demographic shifts or other factors, to update their details. It keeps the voter register accurate and reflective of the current population,” he stated.
He added that maintaining an up-to-date voter register enhances civic engagement and trust in the electoral process, urging citizens to take advantage of the ongoing registration to secure their right to vote.
The meeting ended with both agencies reaffirming their commitment to deepen collaboration ahead of future elections. The NOA and INEC pledged to jointly intensify voter education campaigns across rural and urban communities in Akwa Ibom State to ensure broad participation in the democratic process.
