UCL: Liverpool humble Frankfurt 5–1 to silence critics, end historic slump

Liverpool finally snapped their nightmare, emphatically losing streak, crushing Eintracht Frankfurt 5–1 away in Germany. It was a night of redemption for Arne Slot’s side, who arrived under immense pressure after four consecutive defeats that had plunged the English champions into crisis talks. But when it mattered most, the Reds roared back to life, and did so with a ruthless swagger.

It didn’t start well. For the fifth straight game, Liverpool conceded first, with Rasmus Kristensen finishing off a lightning counterattack after Mario Goetze carved open the visitors’ midfield. At that point, it looked like another long night for Slot’s side, especially with star man Mohamed Salah dropped to the bench amid poor form. Yet that early setback seemed to ignite a spark that had been missing for weeks.

Hugo Ekitike, facing his former club, drew Liverpool level against the run of play, coolly slotting under Michael Zetterer before raising his hands in apology to the Frankfurt crowd. From that moment, the mood shifted. Virgil van Dijk then bullied his way through a helpless Ansgar Knauff to head home from a corner, and Ibrahima Konate repeated the feat moments later. In ten furious minutes, Liverpool had flipped the game from despair to dominance, heading into halftime 3–1 up and brimming with confidence.

The second half belonged to Florian Wirtz. The young German midfielder, who had been under scrutiny since his big-money move to Anfield, finally showed why Liverpool invested in him. Returning to his homeland, he orchestrated the tempo and delivered two inch-perfect assists, first for Cody Gakpo, then for Dominik Szoboszlai, to complete the rout. His creative resurgence might just be the key to Liverpool’s revival after weeks of tactical uncertainty.

Not everyone shone, however. Alexander Isak’s struggles continued as he was hooked at halftime for Federico Chiesa, while Frankfurt’s backline imploded once again, conceding 23 goals in their last six games.

Once renowned for their gritty European nights, the Germans looked out of ideas and spirit as Liverpool danced around them with newfound fluidity.

For Arne Slot, this result will bring both relief and caution. Relief, because his men finally looked like champions again; caution, because tougher opponents await.

Still, after weeks of doubt, criticism, and defensive chaos, Liverpool’s demolition of Frankfurt wasn’t just a win, it was a statement that the Reds are not dead yet.
