OAU Lecture: FCT Minister expresses belief in Nigeria’s potential

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has expressed a resolute belief in Nigeria’s potential for redemption, despite its numerous socio-political and economic challenges. Delivering a keynote address at the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Distinguished Personality Lecture in Ile-Ife, Wike articulated a compelling vision for a “Nigeria of Our Dreams.”
In a press statement from Rabi Musa Umar, the Assistant Director, Press, Office of the Minister on Thursday, Wike lamented that Nigeria has deviated from its cherished dream, citing corruption, mediocrity, and despair as major contributors to this divergence. However, he remains optimistic about the nation’s potential for redemption, affirming that “Nigeria can still rise and soar to the pinnacle of the hopes and glory that attended her upon her birth.”
The Minister emphasized the importance of courageous and prepared leadership, citing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as an example of a leader who embodies essential leadership qualities. Wike also stressed the need for citizen cooperation, stating that “no leader, no matter how endowed, equipped and selfless, can truly succeed without the support and cooperation of the citizenry.”
He therefore highlighted the importance of prioritizing key sectors such as education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and security. He commended President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and initiatives like the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), aimed at advancing higher education.
Barr Ezenwo Nyesom Wike emphasized the need for a thriving democratic culture rooted in accountability, transparency, and active citizen participation. He also advocated for an independent and courageous judiciary, immune from manipulation, and committed to safeguarding human rights and upholding justice for all.
The event was attended by notable figures, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, who described Wike as “A politician to be studied” for his sustained relevance over two decades. The Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen, also praised Wike as a tested politician and public office holder who speaks his mind.
