Police Declare Young Woman Wanted After Alleged Same-Sex Scandal Sparks Mob Attack

A young woman identified as Osarugue Iyvonne Osemwingie, born on November 28, 2003, has been declared wanted by the Nigeria Police following an incident that reportedly triggered public outrage and a near jungle-justice episode in her community.

According to police sources, Osarugue Iyvonne Osemwingie was allegedly caught in a compromising situation involving same-sex activity with another woman (Ife Sorunke), an act said to have been noticed by a female resident who raised an alarm that drew members of the community to the scene.

Eyewitness accounts claimed that the alarm quickly attracted a crowd, leading to a public confrontation as residents attempted to assault Osarugue Iyvonne Osemwingie and her alleged partner, accusing them of engaging in conduct prohibited under Nigerian law.

The situation reportedly escalated into a mob attack, with the two women of being lynched and before the police could arrived and intervened, one of the suspect (Ife Sorunke) has been beaten to stupor and later died on the way to the hospital while the other suspect (Osarugue Iyvonne Osemwingie) escaped with aid of other accomplices. The mobs were dispersed and some other accomplices were taking into custody to prevent further violence.

Security sources said the police moved the suspects out of the area for their safety and began preliminary investigations, noting that same-sex relationships are criminalised under Nigerian law and subject to prosecution where sufficient evidence exists.

However, Osarugue Iyvonne Osemwingie who escaped from the scene under unclear circumstances before her arrest, prompted the authorities to launch a manhunt and place her on the wanted list.

The Nigerian Police have since appealed to the public to provide any credible information that could lead to her arrest, urging citizens to report sightings to the nearest police station rather than taking the law into their own hands, as investigations into the incident continue.
