Majority have been robbed of their votes- Olijebu of Ijebu -Owo
From Bola Ojuola, Akure
A First class traditional ruler in Ondo state, Oba Kofoworola Oladehinde Ojomo, the Olijebu of Ijebu Owo has said that majority of Nigerian people have been robbed of their right to participate in Saturday’s election due to the scarcity of cash and fuel occasioned by Central Bank policy to redesign the currency note.
The Oba who retired as a Major General in the Nigerian Army in year 2000 said majority of people did not take part in the elections not because they are not interested but because of the situation in the country.
According to him, those who stayed away have only given the opportunity to the people who do not share there view to choose for them.
We have talked talked to our people before the election on the reason why they should go out to vote..
The Oba who was recently promoted to a first class traditional ruler was however of the opinion that the new currency policy might have been targeted at some few individuals.
He noted that for him and his household and his workers they have gone to exercise their voting right.
He was satisfied that despite low turnout, the election was peaceful.
Also, the MD/CEO Klick Konnect Network, Chief Alex Ajipe has described yesterday’s outing as a success.
At Unit 16, Uso/Emure ward 11 where he voted ,Ajipe said he was satisfied with the turnout of voters.

”It is better organised and seamless but isn’t really easy for the illiterates because I also had to ask a lot of questions regarding the ballot boxes differentiation.
”The logistics and promptness is good and very orderly unlike when there is quantum of security agencies.
”Now people are beginning to understand that voting is their right which should be done without hindrance,” he said.
Sen. Ashiru however noted that there was still room for improvement
”INEC has done well but a lot still has to be covered because what works well in developed countries might not be very ideal for this place.
”I think we should find a way out because majority of people in Kwara South are not too literate. The process should be more seamless and localised,” he said.
On his part, Sen. Ibrahim who voted in Polling Unit 005, Ojoku ward in Ojoku said the improvement in technology and logistics made the election better than it was in 2019.
He said the peaceful conduct of the elections showed that Nigerians will be given opportunity to make a better choice.

Violence erupted at Anifowoshe ‘ward 08’ Ubandawaki, Ilorin West LGA of Ilorin during yesterday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The ward in question is the voting spot for former Minister of Sports who is also the PDP Senatorial candidate for Kwara Central, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
Elections materials did not arrive at the centre until around 1:00pm as voters had to endure the scorching heat awaiting the materials and the officials deployed to the area.
Abdullahi in an all white attire had also joined the queue deploring every attempts made in his honour to shunt the queue. Moments before his turn, a supposed agent of a rival political party had insisted that the candidate should be the last to cast his vote, citing “equal rights.”
All attempts at convincing him that the Minister had actually taken his turn had proved abortive and when it was apparent that he would not allow him to vote, Abdullahi’s supporters had to bundle him out of the way of their boss.
Through out this moment, there was no presence of any security operatives on ground in the area. The Kwaran state Police Command had adopted a patrolling mechanism for the monitoring of the polls.
The agent in question had cleverly put a call across to his fellows who had promptly come in their tens throwing chairs at will with threats to kill. The Minister was unperturbed urging his supporters to maintain their calm. The process was obstructed for about 30 minutes before the Police patrol team came in to restore the much needed sanity into the system.
Abdullahi blamed the development development on the late arrival of election materials to the area. He however lauded the INEC staff on duty and “my entire people in general” for not allowing emotions to override their sense of decency during that “moment of anger.”

Oyetola, wife cast vote in Iragbiji, lauds earlier peaceful process
… expresses worry over violent attacks in some parts of Osun
… reaffirms his belief in God for APC victory
Adegboyega Oyetola, the immediate past Osun Governor and his wife, Kafayat, on Saturday, cast their vote at Ward 1, Unit 10, Boripe Local Government Area of the State.
Oyetola, who applauded the peaceful electoral process and turnout of voters at his polling unit, however raised serious concerns over reports of severe attacks on members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in some parts of the State particular in Ijesaland and Ile-Ife.
Addressing journalists shortly after he casts his vote, the former Governor decried the spate of political violence in Osun especially in Ijesaland, saying it is unfortunate that heinous acts of political hoodlums were not curtailed till election day notwithstanding that official report of the incidences were made available to security agencies.
He however expressed confidence in God for his party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima to emerge victorious saying, “by God’s grace, we are winning the election of today.”
“Going by the situation of where I voted, the process was peaceful, INEC officials were found at the polling unit. The election is going on well. But I have heard reports of some destruction in some parts of the State particularly in Ilesa and Atakunmosa West and Atakunmosa East. Very unfortunate, despite the fact that we have been on this for a while.
“Our members have been driven out of their homes before the election. With all the noise we made to the security agencies with the aim of ensuring that they provide adequate security so that people are able to cast their votes without being molested or intimidated, it appears those hoodlums still had their way. I will be surprised if our people could be to allowed to vote in those areas.
“If people are not guaranteed their safety, the tendency is that they may not want to come out at all to cast their votes and this may lead to voter apathy. Though the security agents are trying but this is a preventable thing. Ordinarily it shouldn’t have been allowed to happen at all. Once you drive away voters, they are not likely to come back, so, that is my fear.
“Well, I must commend members of our party and the entire people of the state for exercising their civic responsibilities inspite all the harassment and intimidation. For the past two to three months, there have been killings, and about three to five days ago, five members of our party were killed around Ijesa axis, and that could have prevented and scared people away from voting.
“But in spite of that, people are still very willing to cast their votes for the candidate of their choice which I believe in any case is APC. So, we are still going to win by the grace of God,” Oyetola said.

Voters Protest in Yenagoa over non availability of electoral materials
By Odie Ramon
Some eligible voters in Yenagoa stormed the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Bayelsa State to protest against non voting in some parts of the State capital.
Voting could not hold in Wards 4, 6 and 8 in Yenagoa due to shortage in the ballot papers for the Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency Election into the House of Representatives.
Some voters had claimed that 48,500 ballot papers were missing, sparking protests in Agudama Community that there would be no election until they are produced.
The Supervising Presiding officer, Austin Akekere had confirmed that only 1,500 ballot materials were received.
The absence of election in the three wards resulted in protests at the INEC Bayelsa headquarters located in the Swali axis of the State capital as voters chanted “We Must Vote”
This resulted in shooting and tension at the INEC Headquarters when the Resident Electoral Commissioner Mr. Alex Hart arrived the scene, and tried to address the crowd, as security operatives fired warning shots into the sky to disperse the crowd.
The protesters alleged that, they were not given right to vote, as there are no visible iNEC staff at Imgbi , Azikoro, Kpansia, Okaka down to Opolo.
The REC alongside the Commissioner of Police, Ari Mohammed Ali later addressed the protesters to calm them down.
In an interview with journalists, the Head of Voter Education and Publicity, INEC Bayelsa, Mr. Wilfred Ifogah said the election in the affected areas would go on later in the day.
In areas such as Brass and Southern Ijaw election material and INEC Adhoc Staff arrived late in the Local Government Areas, hence accreditation and voting commenced late in the afternoon in most polling units.

Creation of additional Polling Units, a blessing to Nigeria Democracy – Ex deputy Governor. By Samson Osuo -Lafia.
Former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Silas Ali Agara, said the creation of additional Polling Units has led to decongest the high number of Voters in the old Polling Units.

According to him before now Polling Units in many places used to be congested with voters, adding that with the creation of additional ones, the situation is now less stressful.
Agara however, pointed out that INEC would have carried out more sensitization programme concerning the creation to enable Voters at the rural areas to check where to cast their Votes early.
“I commend INEC for the creation of additional Polling Units, the creation has led to decongest Polling Units, the only problem is that some voters are moving from one Polling Unit to another to check their names, INEC would have done more in sensitizing Voters at the rural areas to free them from over stressing themselves”.

Gov Akeredolu casts vote, urges voters to go out and vote
-as state witnesses low turn out of voters
From Bola Ojuola, Akure
Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, on Saturday cast his vote in ward 5, unit 6, ljebu Owo, his home town.
This is just as the state witnessed low turn out of voters in towns and villages.
The Governor arrived his polling unit at exactly 10:47am amidst cheers from voters at the unit.
After the initial technical hiccups of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) which lasted for about eight minutes, Governor Akeredolu was accredited at exactly 10:55am and immediately cast his vote.
Speaking with journalists shortly after exercising his franchise, the Governor said he was not too impressed with the turn out of voters. He however expressed hope that more voters will come out before voting ends.
His words:”Probably, this initial hiccup applied to me only because several people have passed through this and they didn’t have much problem.
“And I believe that it was caused by the surging crowd, you know they had to clear the crowd, and at a point, they felt it was because I am wearing white, whichever one, the important thing is that at the end of the day, the BVAS machine captured me. That’s all. So, when there is some delay, we should expect it but I have cast my vote.
“Well, I am not too impressed yet with the turnout but I expect that many people will come out. But we need to be larger than this, I have always voted here. But I know that people are going to come out. We are more and it’s too early in the day now, since they know you come and vote and go. So everybody will come out at their own convenient time. Many people will still come and vote.
“But for me, INEC has displayed their Independence, I don’t see anything they are doing now. At least, at this polling booth, I don’t know what is happening in other places but they have been cautious. Those who are there, they are been cautious and I believe that is their Independence. For now, I don’t know what is happening in other places.”

Gender Advocacy groups launches campaign against electoral violence against women in Bayelsa
…..tracks cases of violence against women in nationwide
BY ODIE RAMON, YENAGOA.
Gender Advocacy groups in Bayelsa State have launched a campaign to stop Violence Against Women in Politics (Stop-VAWIP) during the Presidential, House of Representatives, and Senate elections in 2023, held tomorrow, the 25th of February.
According to the groups, the different dimension of violence against women including physical, economic, emotional and sexual over the years have limited and reduce women participation in politics and negatively impact Nigeria’s political and socio-economic development and women’s health and general well-being.
The Gender Advocacy groups made up of the GREP/Stop VAWIP, the Gender Response Initiatives (GRIT) and the Nigerian Civil Defence and Security Corps (NSCDC), declared that the Stop-VAWIP campaign is to raise awareness of the harmful effects of violence against women in politics and engage relevant stakeholders to mitigate them, encourage women to actively participate in the electoral process and track and respond to cases of violence against women in politics during the election period.
The Stop VAWIP partners, GRIT led by Barr. Dise Goddy Harry, Executive Director, GREP and Convener of the Stop VAWIP, Bayelsa State, Deaconess Rosemary Oweifawari and the Commandant, NSCDC, Bayelsa, Commandant Lucy Fakoya, agreed that the stop Violence Against Women in Politics (Stop-VAWIP) campaign recognizes the link between gender-based electoral violence and the low level of participation of women in politics and aims to enhance women’s active participation in politics and electoral processes by mitigating violence against women in politics.
Deaconess Rosemary Oweifawari, while addressing newsmen at the NSCDC headquarters in Yenagoa, said “Violence against women takes many forms and has continued to take on new forms and dimensions. Some of them are, but are not limited to, physical, economic, emotional, sexual, and other forms of violence. negative effect on Nigeria’s political and socio-economic development. This violence negatively impacts women’s health and general well-being.”

Elections: Popoola alleges collusion of Kwara REC with Kwara Govt.
Emmanuel kehinde,Ilorin
Mr Saheed Popoola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) House of Representatives candidate has alleged the Kwara Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Attahiru Madami, of collusion with Kwara government.
Popoola who is vying to represent Offa/Oyun/Ifelodun Federal Constituency said this on Saturday in Offa, after casting his vote at Polling Unit 004 Ojomu Central II, Eeso Pataki.
In Kwara, we want the REC to comply with the law in order not to subvert the will of the people by colluding with the government of the day.
”We have it on good authority, the relationship between REC and the state government and we are not comfortable with them.
”We have written a petition earlier to Abuja because we don’t want any chaos in Kwara.
”People’s will must prevail, the votes must count,” the SDP candidate said.
He however commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the introduction of Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) which made the process seamless.
”So far so good, the introduction of BVAS is a mileage in the history of our democracy.
”It has helped because I didn’t spend up to three minutes for accreditation and voting which is an improvement to what we used to have,” he said.
Popoola also noted that there was no voter aparthy as the turn out was impressive.
”The turnout is okay and not different from what we used to have but what is making it look as if it’s low is because accreditation and voting is done together.
”Unlike before that you accredit and come back to vote. Now people get accredited, they vote and they leave,” he
