Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu reaffirm commitment to women empowerment
Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state has reaffirmed commitment to women empowerment to enhance their socio-economic wellbeing.
The governor was speaking this Monday in Maiyama town at the flag-off and disbursement of individual livelihood grants to members of Women Affinity Groups in three local government areas comprises of Argungu, Maiyama and Ngaski under which fifty four housand women have been shortlisted as beneficiaries.
He said the gesture was a tripartite scheme involving the World Bank, the Federal Government and Kebbi State Government aimed at assisting rural women engaged in petty trade such as groundnut extractions, bean cake business, clothing materials and handcraft to improve their economic capacity.
He cautioned beneficiaries to make judicious use of the grants for the target objective.
Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu expressed the hope that products from Kebbi state would in the near future be marketed at the world stage, saying that the government would explore all sources of empowerment to women in the state.
In a remark, the Deputy Governor who is the chairman of steering committee said the Nigeria for Women Project operational in three local governments of Maiyama, Ngaski and Argungu has met the required stipulations for disbursement as individual livelihood support.
On her part, the Minister for Women Affairs, Pauline K. Tallen represented by Director-Special Duties, Alhaji Umar Hamisu Koko said Kebbi state has a total number of 2,268 WAGs with a teeming population of 49,920 women as members.
Ninety Six Million, Four Hundred and Thirteen Thousand, One Hundred and Ninety Naira has been earmarked for disbursement.
In an address, the National Coordinator Nigeria for Women Project, Ruth Peter M. Shaila said the Federal Government took bold measures to secure support from World Bank to empower women and improve their access to finance.
The Coordinator said, Kebbi State was leading in ensuring all the three benefiting local government areas met all the requirements stipulated.
The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Women Affairs, Hajiya Aishatu Mohammad Maikurata said the project has trained and empowered women to enhance their livelihood opportunity.
In a goodwill messages, the Chairman of Ngaski Local Government, Abdullahi Buhari Warah and the Sarkin Kudun Maiyama Dr. Aliyu Mohammad Maiyama described the project as one of the best schemes beneficial to rural areas aimed at improving the economic wellbeing of the people.
Governor later made a symbolic presentation of cheques to beneficiaries and flagged off cash disbursement.
