The National President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Honourable Muhammad Magaji Gettado, attended a two-day stakeholders’ meeting on the importance of soil health in agricultural production in Kano State on 21st and 22nd October.
The meeting focused on improving agricultural productivity and food security by identifying the appropriate seeds and fertilizers for different soil types and geographical locations across Nigeria.
This approach is aimed at ensuring that farmers use suitable agricultural inputs, avoid inappropriate fertilizer application, and achieve better crop yields.
Organized by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) with support from the World Bank. The meeting brought together the representative of the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, Commissioners for Agriculture, heads of agricultural research institutions, diplomats, and other key stakeholders in Nigeria’s agricultural and livestock sectors, alongside government officials.
Among those attended the program with the National President include Deputy National Financial Secretary Alh. Widi Jigawa, AFAN Chairman Kano, and some AFAN executives from Jigawa, Kano and Bauchi.
Speaking at the event, AFAN National President Honourable Muhammad Magaji Gettado commended the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the World Bank for supporting this important initiative. He noted that understanding the specific soil requirements of different locations would help farmers make informed decisions on seed selection, fertilizer application, and other farming practices, ultimately enhancing agricultural productivity and strengthening national food security.
