There is a timeless truth about leadership: its greatest achievement is not the office one occupies, but the people one raises. History does not remember leaders simply because they held high positions. It remembers those who transformed lives, created opportunities, and produced other leaders whose impact continued long after they left office.
This is the philosophy that has defined Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna (SARDAUNAN GOMBE) throughout his distinguished career in both the public and private sectors.
His approach to leadership has never been about authority, titles, or power. It has always been about investing in people, recognising potential, creating opportunities, and empowering others to succeed.
During his tenure as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Dr. Gwamna’s impact extended far beyond organisational performance. He deliberately identified talent, mentored young professionals, entrusted them with responsibility, and created pathways for their growth.
Today, the results are evident across Nigeria’s electricity industry. Two professionals who served under his leadership, Dr. Abubakar Shuaibu Jimeta and Dr. Umar Habu Hashidu, have gone on to become Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of two different electricity distribution companies. Many others whom he nurtured now serve as senior managers, executives, and technical leaders across the Nigerian power sector industry.
His influence, however, extends far beyond mentorship.
His commitment to youth empowerment is equally reflected in employment creation. Through opportunities created at Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and Kaduna Electric Distribution Company (KAEDCO), Dr. Gwamna facilitated the employment of more than 1,500 young people from Gombe State. Beyond providing jobs, he opened doors to meaningful careers, enabling thousands of families to earn sustainable livelihoods while strengthening the Nigerian power sector with skilled professionals.
Believing that education is the foundation of sustainable development, Dr. Gwamna invested in the future by sponsoring 39 young indigenes of Gombe State to Yamusa Academy in Kebbi State. For many of these young people, it was a life-changing opportunity that opened the door to quality education and a brighter future.
Recognising that today’s leaders must compete in a global environment, he also sponsored 10 youths from Gombe to Morocco to pursue undergraduate studies, equipping them with international exposure, quality education, and the skills required to excel in an increasingly competitive world.
Earlier, during his tenure at the Gombe State Water Board as Executive Chairman, Dr. Gwamna facilitated the employment of over 1000 young people, many of whom continue to contribute meaningfully to their communities and to Nigeria’s development.
These are not merely employment statistics. They represent thousands of dreams realised, families empowered, careers built, and futures transformed.
The young men and women whose lives he touched are today raising families, mentoring others, creating opportunities for others, supporting their communities, and contributing to national development. That is the enduring ripple effect of authentic leadership.
Leadership is not measured by the number of people who work under you.
It is measured by the number of people who become leaders because you believed in them.
Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna’s legacy is therefore not defined by the offices he has occupied, but by the countless lives he has transformed through mentorship, education, opportunity, and human capital development.
When you build people, they build families.
When you build families, you strengthen communities.
When communities are strengthened, nations prosper.
That is the true measure of leadership.
That is the enduring legacy of Dr. Jamil Isyaku Gwamna.
