Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has appealed to All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirants to respect zoning arrangements and embrace consensus as the party gears up for upcoming elections.

The governor made this known during a strategic meeting in Abeokuta with House of Representatives and House of Assembly aspirants, as well as party leaders from the state’s 20 local government areas.

Speaking at the meeting, Abiodun acknowledged that many party members are qualified to contest elective positions but stressed that only one candidate can emerge per seat. He urged aspirants to prioritise unity through dialogue, compromise, and mutual understanding rather than engage in divisive contests.

He explained that zoning arrangements at the local government level would serve as a framework to ensure fairness, equity, and inclusion, adding that grassroots leaders are in the best position to assess aspirants and recommend suitable candidates.

“I am not a dictator, and I have no intention of imposing candidates,” the governor stated, emphasising that decisions would be reached through consultations with relevant stakeholders.

Abiodun cautioned that contentious primaries often lead to bitterness, financial strain, and internal divisions that could weaken the party’s chances at the polls. He noted that adopting consensus would help strengthen cohesion and improve electoral prospects.

To reduce tensions, the governor promised to refund nomination fees to aspirants who fail to secure party tickets. He also assured them of compensation and future opportunities within the party structure.

He further revealed that some aspirants who had stepped down or aligned with party decisions have already been considered for government appointments, describing the move as a strategy to retain experienced members and discourage anti-party activities.

Drawing from his personal political journey, Abiodun urged patience and perseverance among aspirants. He noted that he began contesting elections in 1993 but only became governor in 2019, encouraging them not to lose hope if they are unsuccessful this time.

He clarified that the incentives were not meant to induce loyalty but to recognise commitment and strengthen party unity.

Party elders, including Kola Ogunjobi, Olu Agemo, Adekunle Adesina, Gbenga Kaka, and Iyabo Apampa, commended the initiative, describing it as a practical approach to managing internal competition while rewarding loyalty.

Observers say the development reflects the APC’s broader strategy in Ogun State to manage internal contestation through consultation, consensus-building, and strategic appointments as it works to maintain unity ahead of the elections.
