The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on employers across Nigeria to create enabling environments that allow Corps Members to maximize their potential and contribute meaningfully to national development.
Speaking at the launch of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) innovation hub, tagged “idea2impact,” held at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Nafiu emphasized the importance of mentorship, guidance, and effective leadership in nurturing young talents.
He described Corps Members as “solution providers” capable of driving innovation when properly supported, and urged ministries, departments, agencies, and private organizations to tap into their skills and creativity for societal advancement.
Nafiu commended NITDA for offering Corps Members a platform to showcase their ingenuity, noting that the idea2impact initiative presents a viable opportunity for young Nigerians to demonstrate their problem-solving abilities.
“The youths we have in NYSC are solution providers. I challenge organizations to harness their wealth of experience and skills to create solutions for the larger society,” he said, adding that the NYSC scheme remains relevant and continues to open doors of opportunity for participants.
The NYSC boss also highlighted ongoing reforms within the scheme, including the digitization of Corps Members’ identity cards and other technological innovations introduced under his leadership.
In his remarks, the Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to equipping young Nigerians with skills needed to thrive in the evolving ICT landscape.
He stressed the importance of strategic career planning and adaptability, urging Corps Members to develop relevant skills and position themselves effectively before entering the labor market.
Drawing from his own experience as a former Corps Member over two decades ago, Abdullahi encouraged participants to take full advantage of opportunities presented during their service year to build visibility and professional growth.
According to him, several Corps Members have already contributed significantly to NITDA’s operations, with some developing innovative solutions currently being used within the agency.
“You need to promote yourself. Hard work alone is not enough—you must be assertive to achieve your goals,” he said, adding that outstanding Corps Members may be retained by the agency based on merit.
The idea2impact initiative is part of NITDA’s broader efforts to foster innovation and empower young Nigerians to contribute to the country’s digital transformation agenda.
